Manufactured at the Halewood Assembly Facility near Liverpool,[1] the X-Type was developed during Jaguar's tenure in the Premier Automotive Group (PAG) of Ford Motor Company — and was based on a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform, shared with the contemporary Ford Mondeo.

The smallest of the Jaguar model range, the X-Type was marketed in notchback saloon and estate variants, and was the first estate manufactured in series production by the company.
